The best spot for a reading nook might be the slice of living room beside a window, not an empty room you don’t have. In a rental, the trick is to build comfort with pieces you can move when the lease is up. A chair, a lamp, and a soft place to rest a book can be enough.

Choose the corner first

Look for a spot that gets daylight without blocking a walkway, radiator, or door. If the only available corner is near the sofa, that can work too; a small rug or a cushion in a different texture helps it feel like a destination rather than leftover space.

Measure the footprint before bringing home a chair. Leave room to pull it out and sit down comfortably, especially in a narrow apartment or shared living room. A compact armchair can be lovely, but a floor cushion or an existing dining chair with a supportive cushion may be the more practical choice.

Layer comfort, not clutter

A throw blanket, a small side table, and a reading light cover most of the essentials. Choose a table that holds a mug and a book without becoming a catchall, and consider a plug-in lamp or a portable light if adding fixtures is not an option in your rental.

Keep the details easy to shift around: a basket for current reads, a pillow you already own, or a plant that suits the available light. A nook feels cozy when it supports the way you actually spend time there, not when every surface has been decorated.

Make the setup yours

Before buying anything, try the chair you already have in the chosen spot for a few evenings. You’ll learn whether the light is comfortable, whether you want a footrest, and what you reach for once you sit down. That small test can help prevent a well-intentioned purchase from becoming another thing to store.
